Mosaic Artist

Helen Stewart’s inspiration to become a mosaic artist began in the tiled rooms of Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, in the mid-1980s. Some years later, while living in Sydney, Australia, she spent a year studying traditional glass and tesserae mosaic tiling.

In 1991 she established her career as an artist. The first piece Helen created was a mosaic shoe which she covered in small, hand-cut shards of antique porcelain china, in place of glass tiles. This original design soon became her signature, and by using china, she inadvertently instigated a contemporary method of mosaics that went on to become a worldwide trend, aiding the resurgence and popularity of an ancient art form. Among Helen’s many commissions are a series of nine bathrooms reminiscent of Antonio Gaudi’s work in Barcelona, a pebble mosaic ceiling, large mosaic map, mirrored mosaic bathroom, wall mirrors, vases, and her signature mosaic shoes.

Helen Stewart’s mosaics are notable for the excellence of quality, their clean design, and timeless appeal. These pieces are in private collections around the globe, and her work widely published in Australia, New Zealand, and Britain. She has had feature articles in Vogue Australia, Vogue Living, Next Magazine NZ, House and Garden NZ, The London Magazine and The Daily Telegraph UK.

Helen’s mosaics are available on commission.
